The Post Recovery Management Program

Detox Centre of Manitoba has developed the Post Recovery Management Program as we have also determined that the need for this program is critical as the issues are no longer drug use, but the complex coping journey into a life that is most often unfamiliar to them.

Research by the Canadian & American nationally recognized bodies, consistently show that the first Three to  Twelve months of the post-recovery stage is where the individual is most likely to re-lapse.

In this 3 to  12 month period of Post Recovery the participant is, at times, unsure of how to handle and overcome EXCLUSION OR INCLUSION from family, friends, community and employment environments.

Studies also show that the post-recovery stage is where the participant is also in danger of relapse due to the weakness of newly acquired coping skills, which are still not strong enough to withstand the day-to-day stressors.

It is critical to note that the newly recovered “graduate” participant is experienced in handling a chaotic lifestyle but, in most cases, has little experience in living a non-Chaotic life.  In this percentage of cases, the participant is entering unfamiliar ground.

Detox Centre of Manitoba has developed the Post Recovery Management Program as a direct result of observed gaps in the seamless continuity of supports.

Currently, many clients leaving an intensive Residential Treatment Program are vulnerable to lapsing into their formal pattern of use if they are not actively engaged in a continuing recovery program.

Research indicates that continuity of monitoring and support at this stage is a critical component of a recovery program.

The Post Recovery Management Program

The Detox Centre of Manitoba second stage recovery program is for the participant to maintain and sustain long-term recovery.  Each participant is assisted with the continuing development of knowledge and skills to manage their recovery journey.

Criteria to participate is;

  • Continuing abstinent from alcohol and drugs.
  • A review of their personal continuing recovery goals.
  • Commitment to attendance and participation in a Continuity of Recovery.

Detox Centre of Manitoba has also reviewed research papers and publications on developing and delivering comprehensive and holistic models of post recovery and supports for Addiction and related

Mental Health illness programs.  A brief listing (but not limited to) of research papers and publication material resourced are as follows.

  • Toward Recovery and Well Being,  A framework of Mental Health Canada
  • Open Minds, Healthy Minds, Ontario
  • Stronger Together, Support & Trustee Advisory Services of Brampton Caledon

  • Addiction in the Workplace, An Employer's Guide
  • Addiction Substance Abuse, Workplace Tool Kit
  • It's Our Business, Alcohol, drugs and gambling in the workplace, The Addicted Employee: After Treatment

The goal of the Post Recovery Management Program is to work with each participant to:

  • Successfully move through the critical first 3 to 12 months of the post recovery phase.
  • Prevent or minimize setbacks (relapse).
  • Work with each participant to achieve a comfort level in being able to address and cope with the day-to-day life stressors (that we all face) without turning to past behaviors.
